A Guide to Choosing Native Flowers

A Guide to Choosing Native Flowers

Bethany Scott is the florist and owner of BESS, located just around the corner from our Paddington store on William Street.  Before moving to Sydney to create her own florist, Bethany grew up on an Australian native flower farm in Mangrove Mountain and is an expert on all things native flowers.  Bethany shares her advice on what's currently in season, what the longest-lasting native flowers are, how to best care for them and how to pick the perfect bunch for Valentine's Day.

What are your favourite native flowers and why?
I have always loved Flannel Flowers, they are so delicate and have a soft and woollen feel. They are out of season at the moment and I can't wait for their return!

What are the longest lasting native flowers?
Most native flowers are longer lasting than other cut flowers.  I love Banksia, it is so sculptural, comes in a range of colours and lasts for weeks.

What are the best native flowers in season right now?
Flowering Gum, Banksia, Ptilotus, Sparsa and South Australian Daisy! (Pictured below from left to right)

Do you have any advice on caring for native flowers?
Most flowers love a cut & fresh water every couple of days.  Don’t skimp on the water - deep water is best.  Keep them in a cool place and you’ll be surprised how long they last.

If you were going to buy flowers for Valentine's Day, what are some alternative native choices to roses?
Flowering Gum has had a delayed season because of the cool summer.  The hot weather helps it pop so a few more hot days and it should be perfect for Valentine's Day!  The shades of pink and red work very nicely for the occasion.
